Housemaid's Knee (Pre-Pateller Bursitis)

Housemaid's knee, also known as pre-patellar bursitis, occurs when the pre-pateller bursa (which lies in front of the kneecap) becomes inflamed. Normally, this body part exists to reduce the friction between the tendon in the knee and the overlying skin used when bending the knee. This injury can range in severity, from acute and sudden onset to a long-term, chronic injury. Typical causes for housemaid's knee includes a direct blow or fall to knee or repeated damage to the knee from continuous kneeling (hence the name).

Common Symptoms

Symptoms of pre-pateller bursitis include the following:

  • Tenderness or pain on the kneecap or immediately below it
  • Swollen kneecaps that are warm to the touch
  • Trouble kneeling
  • Visible fluid-filled lump over the patella
  • Tender lump floating under the skin on the kneecap (chronic cases only)

Treatments for this condition depend on the severity of the injury. In some case, simple ice application and compression may alleviate the symptoms. In other, more serious cases, surgery may be required to remove the bursa completely. These treatments can be costly, putting a huge financial burden on families. That is why it is imperative that you receive workers' compensation benefits if they apply to your individual situation.

Clearly, other professions that require constant kneeling may also put employees at risk, not only housemaids. Unfortunately, this painful condition can interfere with required duties at a variety of jobs. If you have been injured on the job, you should not hesitate to pursue the funds to which you are entitled.
