Deciding, overcoming procrastination, and taking action is for most people the single biggest challenge to overcome. Haunted by a history of "diet and failure", it seems useless to try and take on the next challenge knowing it will probably be "just another" weight loss failure.
Commitment is another "key ingredient". If the approach is one of "let's try it and see what happens", you are setting yourself up for yet another diet failure. If you do not believe you will achieve success, you will not be committed to "stick with the program".
For successful weight loss, motivation, encouragement and support, are three ingredients that are to be added in rather large volumes. In most cases, the normal "family and friends" support structure proves inadequate. In order to "keep the peace", these people tend to back off far too easily when you actually need "an extra push". When you feel down and want to "get off the diet", your failure is simply "accepted". They "knew this was going to happen" anyway.
For many overweight people the word "exercise" is "something not discussed in civil conversation". Therefore you van substitute it with "activity" in this recipe. "Activity" includes anything that will get the heart rate up, the blood pumping and the lungs working. This is, incidentally, also a basic definition of exercise. Whether you play outside with the kids (totally exhausting), ride a bicycle, dance, or do Taebo, as long as it meets with the basic requirements, it will contribute to weight loss success.
Effort will be required in large amounts. It could be an effort to get up and play with the kids, especially if you know you will be a wreck in five minutes. It could be an effort to move your head from side to side when offered temptation. It could be an effort to keep going when your bathroom scale doesn't tell you what you want to know. It could be an effort to dish up "normal" meals for the rest of the family, knowing it contains a favorite you cannot eat right now.
The diet becomes a small part of the recipe once you see all the other ingredients involved. Diet success, or diet failure, involves a lot more than just the diet. Your "diet recipe", or your "diet success system", needs to include all of the ingredients listed above.
